Baro Bibimbap

Baro Bibimbap, an instant formulation of the ubiquitous Korean dish, rice with mixed vegetables, is a popular product for backpackers, second only to instant noodles (ramyun). The bag contains dehydrated rice and veggies and spices, along with chili paste and sesame oil in separate pouches for additional seasoning, along with powder for bean paste soup, and a plastic spoon. Supposedly, the technology was first developed by the Korean military for use in field rations. It actually tastes like real bibimbap, though the texture is understandably a bit off. Not bad for 3,300 won. The one featured here is the kimchi version, though other variations are available, as are products from other companies.

Step 1: remove pouches; sprinkle spice mix onto dehydrated rice and veggies.

Step 2: boil water (cold water is also possible);
pour to fill line (250 ml) indicated on package interior;
seal package and wait 10 min (40 min for cold water).

Step 3: add red chili paste and sesame oil; mix thoroughly.
