Black Ops, Part 1: Yongdae Recreational Forest

The following is Part 1 of a 2-part series about my trip to the Inje (인제) region near Mt. Seorak (설악산) from 22(Fri)-23(Sat) October 2010. In this installment, I discuss the campsite at Yongdae Recreational Forest. Please see related post (Part 2: Mt. Seorak National Park) for additional photos and comments.

Things to Do: as a "recreational forest" (휴양림), the site doesn't offer any activities per se; shallow stream running through the park may offer splashing opportunities during warmer weather; farmer's market about 4 km from entrance, as well as numerous roadside stores along the way, sells various dried seafood (e.g., pollack, squid) caught in nearby East Sea.

Getting There: Gangwon-Do, Inje-Gun, Buk-Myeon, Yongdae-Ri, San 262-1 (강원도 인제군 북면 용대리 산262-1); about 170 km from central Seoul; no public transportation available.

Man-made waterfall

Type of Site: public recreational forest park.

Grounds: dirt; minimal shade coverage under trees; 15 wood decks.

Environment: forest.

Predators: none.

Capacity: in addition to the 15 decks, which may accommodate up to 30 solo campers if shared, grounds offer space for perhaps 60 more, maybe 10-15 families in auto camping mode; park also has structured lodgings in other areas (I had no time to investigate).

Fees: 10,000 won per person; no reservations, first-come basis.

Restrooms: separate mens' and womens' facilities with seated toilets; no toilet paper provided; not very well maintained.

Showers: none.

Water: small 4-tap sink for general washing and cooking purposes.

Supplies: none sold on site; nearest store about 3-km drive.

Electricity: single outlet in the restroom, but too far from campsite to be of practical use.

Communications: moderate signals for mobile phones and 3G network; no wi-fi signal detected.

Contact Info: 033-462-5031.

Staff: in ticket office at entrance.

Due to its remote and isolated location, Yondae Recreational Forest provides a quiet escape from the crowds. We didn't spot another soul during our 2-night stay. But that's about all it has to offer. Our decision to set up there was based solely on our plans to explore the nearby Mt. Seorak National Park, and even that was a 5-km drive away. I highly doubt that I'll ever return, unless another specific reason takes me to the area.

THE END
